Trepanning is extremely efficient, produced quickly in a single pass and leaving a usable core.

Trepanning Piece

Trepanning, also called deep hole boring or burr-holing also has been around for a long time. Historically, it was a term couched in the ancient medical field where “doctors” would drill holes into a person’s head to relieve pressure or just to muck around since they had little knowledge of the brain. Now trepan services are known as the best method for machining and forging deep through holes for custom size tubular or pipe products.

At Rickard Metals we are the leader in managing trepanning services, providing high strength tubular products for the aerospace, defense, petro-chemical industries and more. We are able to guide you through the whole trepanning process, from supplying the alloy to advising and facilitating the trepan itself. Contact us to learn more about our trepanning services.

Advantages of Trepanning Services

Trepanning has an advantage over drilling, primarily in that trepanning machinery are designed to conserve the material taken out of the hole and return it to the customer for other uses or for testing. As a result trepanning is quicker to perform and saves money and material.

Trepanning Process

Trepanning is the process of taking solid materials and drilling them to create a hollow part. The process is begun by utilizing a trepanning machine (or a deep hole boring machine). The solid piece is generally drilled all the way through at the front of the machine, while chips are pushed out and collected from the back. While trepanning generally involves drilling all the way through the material, many variations exist, including modification for different sizes at either end.

Common Applications

Trepanning is most widely used in the oil and gas markets, however, it has broad application across many industries. Trepanning is often utilized in machining heavy equipment and forging piston and cylinder finished parts. Other applications include tubes, barrels, bushings, pumps and sleeves.
